Finishing Touches -Your Bedroom Oasis
Last week our post was all about turning your bedroom into a hidden oasis. This week we’d like to take those ideas one step further and help you hash out all the little details that will turn your bedroom from a simple place to sleep to a beautiful place to unwind and relax. As we said before, your bedroom is an intimate space and perhaps where you feel most comfortable in your home. This is where the work clothes come off and comfy pajamas take center stage. We can’t emphasize this enough: Your bedroom doesn’t just have to be an oasis in your dreams! We want to transform your boudoir into a beautiful oasis that’s brimming with comfort and style. Let’s hash out those details.
Placement
Furniture isn’t everything when it comes to your bedroom. You can have stunning pieces of furniture and still lack in design. If the overall feel of your room doesn’t seem to be flowing, the placement of your furniture might be at fault. Thankfully, simply switching a few pieces around can make a world of difference. Before you begin, take a quick inventory of your bedroom. What pieces of furniture are absolute necessities? Which pieces can find a home somewhere else in your house? Or, better yet, which pieces can be donated or given to friends? We suggest asking an objective friend for help when taking a bedroom inventory (preferably a friend who isn’t afraid to tell you if something doesn’t work). Take out as much excess as you can. The closer you get to a blank canvas, the easier rearranging your furniture will be. Next, ask yourself a few questions:
- Is the room large or small?
- Are the ceilings high or low?
- Which direction are the windows facing?
- What other purposes will this room need to serve?
- How do you want this space to make you feel?
How you answer these questions will determine which furniture pieces will work best in the space and how to arrange them in the most aesthetically pleasing way. If you have a small bedroom you’ll probably want to determine how much storage space you’ll need. Many furniture pieces can be customized to incorporate hidden storage options so it’s possible you won’t need both a dresser and a chest of drawers. While working with smaller spaces do offer their fair share of challenges, that doesn’t mean they have to compromise on style. But, more on that in another blog post! If your space is small, you’ll probably want to opt for a queen size bed and modest headboard that’s still full of style. If your space is large, you might want to make a grander statement by incorporating a beautiful sleigh bed. For low ceilings try not to use bulky furniture pieces. For higher ceilings play up the extra space with artwork and drapery.
If your bedroom needs to be multi-functional, you may consider how you can divide the room. If the room is a large, you can try your hand at hanging sheer drapery–talk about drama! For smaller spaces, even a cleverly placed house plant can help a room transition from one space to the next. Whatever you choose to be your furniture, remember that matchy-matchy isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It’s okay if all of your furniture pieces don’t match; the variation will add interest and give your space an eclectic vibe. Don’t get stuck on making sure all of your pieces are the same finish or tone. We love the look of finished pieces with a few painted pieces as well.
Decorative Accents
As we said in our previous blog, your bedroom oasis wouldn’t be complete without meaningful details and thoughtful accents. We love the idea of incorporating a sitting nook into your space, regardless of the size. Whether you have space for a couch or chaise lounge or only have a small corner for a chair, include a place where you can relax. Choose lighting options that reflect the relaxation-theme and install dimmers. Include various-sized lamps throughout the space to highlight features like unique wall art. Don’t forget to offset your bed with a luxurious rug and elegant nightstands. Make use of cleverly hung mirrors to make your space feel larger.
Large circular mirrors are right on trend in 2018. Opt for a circular mirror over a wide chest of drawers rather than a traditional dresser-mirror combination. Or, hang the mirror where it will best reflect the sun to naturally lighten the space.
Don’t forget to spiff up your nightstands! If you have a smaller bedroom, you can forego nightstands all together and opt for a platform bed with built-in shelving. Or, choose a simple pedestal nightstand that won’t bulk up the space. If you do have the space. nightstands are a great way to show of your personal style. Nightstands are the perfect place to show off a favorite photo and highlight an heirloom jewelry box. Add a small bouquet of silk flowers and you will always have something beautiful to wake up to in the morning. Or, frame a motivational quote so that you’ll always start your day on the right foot. Keep it simple and remember that less is (usually) more (except when it comes to chocolate, of course).
