Summer Storage Solutions
Summer is just around the corner and if you’re like us, you might be wondering what happened to spring! It’s amazing how time flies when you’re running a business, interior decorating, traveling to home decor expos and staying updated on the hottest design trends. But, we adore what we do and that’s why we work so hard to make sure there’s a little something for everyone at Home Interior Warehouse. As we wrap up our Spring into Style theme and transition into summer, we can’t help but think about today’s homeowner/decorator. Not everyone has a 17,000 square foot showroom where they can display and swap pieces of furniture and decor. So how does the modern decorator do it? How do we transform our space season after season without breaking the bank or our backs? Well, storage solutions have once again saved the day! In all the hustle and bustle of making sure our showroom hosts the hottest pieces in home decor, there’s been a lot of moving around. We’ve dreamed up a few tips for the folks at home — especially if you have a small space to work with. In this blog we’ll go over some of our favorite small-space storage solutions. (Say that five times fast!)
Remove Clutter
It might not seem fair but the best way to make your home reach its full potential is to regularly rid your home of clutter. Before you start to think about how you’ll store your things, you need to take stock of what you have and determine if you can donate items. While some would argue that you should only own the absolutely necessities, we fall somewhere in the middle between minimalism and hoarding, a happy medium if you will. Assuming that you share these sentiments, we can agree that it’s important for our homes to feel and look good. We suggest picking up your favorite bottle of wine & your best gal-pal to set aside of weekend of clutter purging. As difficult as it feels during the process, the end results are SO worth it!
Height
If you’re vertically challenged, don’t worry – this isn’t personal! When decorating your home you can end up with a surprising amount of dead space in your design. Those areas above and beneath your furniture are often the most underutilized spaces in your home. You are most likely already storing items underneath your bed, why not carry this same thought throughout your home? Now that you’ve successfully rid your home of unwanted clutter you can start to determine which spaces can double as storage duty. If your bed isn’t very high off the ground, perhaps now would be a great time to invest in that dream bed frame you’ve always wanted. If shopping for furniture isn’t on your radar, you can install bed-risers. Don’t worry, there are plenty of options nowadays that won’t even hint at making your bedroom look like a dorm. Play up height in other areas of you home by using floating shelves. There are countless storage ideas online that are ridiculously clever, like screwing mason jars underneath your kitchen cabinets for added storage and using filer organizers for pots, pans, and dishes. By keeping the content inside your cabinets neat and tidy you actually free-up space in what could be potentially clutter-filled areas.
Ottomans & Benches
Ottomans and benches are a designer’s best friend and a hostess’s party pal. Not only do they double as extra seating or a place to set food and drinks, they also offer storage that’s hidden in plain sight. We love the idea of storing games and magazines in an ottoman that doubles as a living room coffee table. When the time comes for a good old-fashioned family game night, you’ll have all your puzzles and game pieces in arm’s reach and a surface to place the game. If your home lacks storage space then your entryway is likely an issue. Whether you have a traditional foyer or an open-concept home, you can reclaim some of the storage space you lack with the help of a storage bench. If you have an open-concept home you can partition the entryway from the rest of the home by using a storage bench as a barrier. You can create the feel of a sectioned space by flanking the bench with a swanky looking coat rack & umbrella holder or even a decent-sized potted plant. Keep the entryway as simple and low-key as possible to maximize visual space. All you need is a beautiful rug and your home will look warm and inviting.
Organizers & Racks
While this tip might seem like a waste of money, we promise it’s worth the investment! Do yourself a favor and invest in drawer organizers. For one, drawer organizers force you to put things away properly and prevent you from over-stuffing a drawer that’s meant for office supplies with last year’s Christmas cards. Drawer organizers aren’t just for jewelry & silverware! Use a drawer organizer for anything from tools and screws to makeup and medicine. Simple pegboard doubles as an excellent way to organize a small garage and when dolled up, can actually make a cute mug display in your kitchen. Racks are simple and easy ways to store bottles of wine, pots & pans, and even shoes. You are really only one click away from discovering your next favorite storage solution!
