3 Space Saving Tips for Your Dorm Room
It’s no surprise that dorm rooms aren’t exactly spacious, but you might be shocked to see just how tiny they are when you arrive at college. My side of my first dorm room was about the size of my closet back at my parent’s house! I wondered how I would ever find a place for all of my belongings, but with some creative thinking and space saving tricks, you can make even the smallest dorm room feel like home.
Go Vertical
One of the biggest wastes of space in my dorm room was in my closet. I had a few long dresses that took up the entire vertical area, but other than that there was a lot of room below my hanging clothes. Make the most of this free space with a hanging shelf organizer. You can use it to store folded clothes and accessories or even school supplies and snacks for when you don’t feel like walking to the cafeteria. Utilize the space below your hanging clothes with a cube organizer. You can hide the clutter with inexpensive fabric cubes or use the shelves to proudly display the books you just spent a fortune on.
Double Duty
With such limited space I made sure all of my furniture served multiple purposes. Instead of a chair opt for a storage ottoman with a tray so it can be used as a seat, table and storage compartment. Why get a regular couch when a futon is a guest bed and couch in one? If you have room for a headboard, invest in a bookshelf style rather than a regular one.
Hanging Out
There are a ton of places you can hang containers rather than have them take up precious floor space. Hang a shoe organizer on the back of your door and use it for everything from Sharpies to shampoo. Hang a chair pocket on the back of your desk chair for storing notebooks or your tablet. Hang a hamper off the side of your loft bed to keep it off the floor.
