3 Ways to Make Your Dorm Room Feel Homey
College is a great place to express yourself, from your major to the groups you join to your personal style. But more often than not, your one size fits all dorm room does not allow for much self expression. White walls that you aren’t allowed to paint, ugly furniture that can’t be replaced, only non-permanent decor. But before you resign yourself to a boring, run of the mill dorm room, check out our three tips on how to make it feel more homey.
Decorate
Even though you can’t nail up picture frames or a nice clock, it doesn’t mean you have to leave those plain white walls untouched. When I was in college I filled the entire wall behind my desk with photos, mementoes of home at the beginning of the year slowly replaced with pictures of new friends I was making. Use double sided tape to stick your photos to the wall in a fun shape like a heart or star for added interest. Another temporary decor solution is washi tape. Use this fun tape to frame your photos, write a message on your wall, or even make temporary wallpaper according to The Finishing Touch Blog.
Lighting
Another way to make your dorm room yours is with lighting. You can’t do anything about the fluorescent overheads, but by adding softer lighting solutions like an elegant lamp and white string lights, you can make your room seem less sterile and cold.
Luxury
Although you probably don’t have a ton of disposable income, investing in some high quality luxury items for your dorm room can make all the difference in making your room feel like a retreat rather than a dungeon. A few basics like high thread count sheets, nice curtains and a quality rug will make your home away from home a bit more homey and will last you for years to come.
