Holiday Decorating for Less
Although Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, it can also be an expensive time of the year for many of us. Gifts, parties, travel expenses and food costs can all add up quickly leaving no room in the budget for decor. The good news, though, is you don’t have to spend a fortune to get your house in the holiday spirit. Here are some low or no cost ideas for Christmas decorating.
Repurpose
One of the best ways to decorate for Christmas is to repurpose things you already have around your house. Real Simple advises hanging old mittens or extra ornaments around the house to create a cozy Christmas atmosphere. Another of their ideas is to use old scarves as a tree skirt rather than spending money on one. Use things from your pantry like cranberries, popcorn and candy canes to decorate your tree as the older generations did for years. You can also put all those Christmas cards you receive to use by framing and hanging them up.
Get Crafty
Another alternative to purchasing expensive decorations is to make them yourself. Whether you are able to sew, draw or simply fold paper there are tons of ideas for homemade holiday decor. Search Pinterest for DIY ornaments, wreaths and centerpiece tutorials, many of which take very little time and skill so anyone can do them. Making your own Christmas decor can also double as a fun holiday activity to do with children or friends.
Dollar Deals
If you want to buy some new decorations you still can without breaking the bank by hitting up your local dollar or discount store. You can find some really nice things like little stockings, candles and beautiful vases and jars to fill with candy.
